Job description:

This is a role in a growing specialist expert witness consultancy based in central London.

This position would suit candidates who have 2-3 years’ work experience, or a graduate-level candidate with previous work experience, with strong written English and communication skills.

Martello specialises in financial services expert witness work and has ambitious growth plans into other consultancy areas and industries. Experience in dispute resolution / expert witness work and finance is desirable but not necessary, and you will learn fast on the job.

Responsibilities and Duties:

This role entails working as part of the case management team supplying analytical support to the appointed expert. Your specific duties will include:

  • Explaining the expert witness process to the appointed expert, and helping them to navigate the different case stages, from initial meetings with legal teams, to the preparation of expert reports and cross-examination in a hearing.
  • Managing, organising and filing large sets of documents and data relating to the dispute.
  • Being the day-to-day liaison with the client legal team, to ensure clear communication and that deadlines are met.
  • Creating initial templates for the expert to use to draft reports, which involves your critical thinking around what content the expert is being asked to provide.
  • Reviewing, proofreading and quality controlling expert reports and other court documents, to ensure documents are produced to a very high quality, court-ready standard. This will involve critical thinking to challenge and support the expert in structuring an expert report and ensure it answers the questions being asked of the expert.
  • Fact-checking and referencing expert reports with the source material.
  • Research and information/data extraction to support the expert’s analysis. Drafting summary research documents.
  • Handling raw financial data and using your skills to design methods for analysing it (for example, re-formatting on Excel for easier analysis by the expert or creating charts to illustrate data).
  • Quickly digesting large amounts of information on complex legal and financial matters and undertaking self-motivated research to better understand topics.
  • Being involved in various aspects of the business including assisting with marketing and business development.

About you:

  • You have exceptional attention to detail, and follow a methodical and considered approach to organisation, proofreading and quality control processes. More so, you believe in taking the time to get things perfect – from word-choice to referencing.
  • You have excellent written English skills. You write clearly, succinctly and error-free, and are able to edit written documents to be more readable and digestible.
  • You have a positive, personable manner and a collaborative approach to work. You know that building relationships will get the best out of the project and team, and you work well with a variety of people (other analysts, our client legal teams and our experts). This role entails working closely alongside our experts, and it’s important to build a friendly rapport and identify and collaboratively solve any issues, so we are working to one goal of a quality report and evidence.
  • You have excellent time and project management skills. Through thoughtful communication, you keep deadlines and stay on top of the needs and next steps on a project, keeping all stakeholders in the loop.
  • You’re not afraid to ask questions or make mistakes. You keep a solution-focused approach to challenges and know when to put your hand up to ask for help from the Martello team.
  • You have experience using Microsoft Excel (charts, formulas, pivot tables) and Word (cross-referencing/footnotes, styles, formatting). You may have some experience of financial services and of legal disputes, but this is not essential, and we will supply training to introduce you to the expert witness process and fundamentals of financial services. What is essential is that you are self-motivated and keen to learn.
  • You are keen to be part of an entrepreneurial firm and wear different hats at times to promote and grow the company as a whole. Everyone jumps in to help with our business development, marketing and thought leadership endeavours.
  • You have a graduate degree or similar equivalent qualification.

Additional Benefits Package and Incentives:

Salary: depending on experience

  • Pension
  • Annual performance bonus
  • Flexible working arrangements (2 days WFH per week (central London office), remote working and primary location flexibility, core hour flexibility)
  • Further training and qualifications supported
